Houston Chronicle, Texas, April 29, 2013 : "Republicans in Austin have little to fear in the short-term in their opposition to Medicaid expansion. However, national Republicans, ...., may take a different perspective". - Maps of Texas for Hispanics, the Uninsured, and Vote Margin 2012

.

The counties on Texas South are strongest for these three statistics :

Excerpts :

Waco-based economic research firm The Perryman Group joined Texas Democrats in urging Texas to accept Medicaid expansion. Ray Perryman, the firm’s president, said the main reason for his support is to improve the overall quality of life for many in Texas.

“It will partially defuse a demographic time bomb that could have notable negative consequences for Texas,” Perryman said in an email exchange.

Perryman said the large uninsured population in Texas will create negative economic results in the long-term, just as increased coverage would cause the reverse. Perryman argued that while the state will have to increase its Medicaid budget, the economic boost to having a healthier population will more than compensate.

Robert Kuttner : Austerity is Killing Europe : Spain and Greece : 30 percent unemployment. -- Britain : 0.3 percent growth. Even Germany, the prime sponsor of these austerity policies, is on the edge of recession. -- It is time to throw out Austerity ideology in the Middle of a Recession !

.

Robert Kuttner in the Huffington Post tells us how the stubborness, intransigence, obstinacy and fanaticism of conservative economists is doing great harm to European Economies. That absurd austerity is what congress republicans have been preaching in the USA.

Some excerpts :

One nation after another is challenging German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the European Central Bank, the two lead purveyors of economic pain as the cure for fiscal sin. The governments of France, Italy, Spain and Portugal are pressing Merkel to relent, and EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, the ultimate weathervane, now says the EU needs to focus on growth instead of belt-tightening. The International Monetary Fund, usually one of the sponsors of fiscal masochism, says Europe is imposing too much pain.

Here is the U.S., the first quarter numbers were lousy. The economy grew at a rate of just 2.5 percent, less than forecasters projected, and not enough to improve the unemployment rate or raise wages. Analysts across the spectrum correctly blamed the slowdown on the sequester, which cut the budget by $85 billion this year, on top of the January deal that raised taxes, mostly on workers, by another $200 billion.

You don't promote growth by slashing demand. Supposedly, fiscal tightening improves business confidence. But if some entrepreneur somewhere decided to break ground for a new factory because the president and Congress at last cut the budget, nobody could find such a person.

Standard & Poor’s "sovereign debt" credit ratings : Australia, Canada, Germany, Northern Europe, and United Kingdom AAA, United States and France AA+, China and Chile AA-, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Panama are BBB

.
India and Spain are BBB-

Those already mentioned are graded as Investment Possibility and Not Speculative. The As are superb investments in "sovereign debt". Note that India and Spain are below some Latin American Nations.

Zambia, Zimbabwe and Venezuela are B+ considered non investment grade and highly speculative. Only the Chinese are happy lending to Venezuela.

Argentina is a miserable B- , and is considered super speculative and most dangerous.

Perhaps that is the reason why the President Cristina Fernandez de Kirtchner is so Chavista and her nation owes many millions of dollars to oil rich Venezuela.

Other Venezuelan Clients : Cuba and Nicaragua are considered the worst of the worst for Sovereign debt. .... Bolivia and Ecuador are considered very poor and dangerous risks.

So you see how being chavista is not good for your credit ratings and your credit worthiness.

Note :

I corrected Colombia, a nation that was upgraded recently. I think that Turkey is going to become "investment grade" very soon or has already been upgraded. I will continue upgrading my list.

FARC Colombian Guerrilas has kidnapped and murdered thousands of Colombian Nationals, also American Citizens, Europeans and Japanese, by the dozens. !! - These nations should care about TOTAL IMPUNITY. --- FARC poisons American Youth with cocaine and morphine

.
The Plan of Colombian President Santos is TOTAL IMPUNITY without shame for FARC, giving them seats in the Senate and House of Representatives without any election. The soldiers that fought with bravery against FARC are starving and will continue starving.

For FARC Drug Production and exports is their main business and source of income. President Santos is a Fool if he believes that criminals are going to abandon this beautiful business. FARC leaders do not control their many troops scattered in many disjoint locations. Many won't accept demobilization.

Those nations like the USA, European Countries and Japan should care about this TOTAL IMPUNITY. Their nationals have been kidnapped, tortured and murdered. Their corporations have suffered extortion.

Both the Paramilitary and the Guerrillas are TERRORISTS and MURDERERS.

But most TERRORIST bombs that kill many civilians are planted by FARC ( almost 100% ) and Land Mines that kill or maim children ( even in this year 2013 ) are 100% sowed by FARC.

Some FARC madmen have killed dozens of their own peasant fighters in a single massacre, because of suspicion and paranoia about betrayal.

This TOTAL IMPUNITY is more absurd and foolish if we consider advances in technology like Global Positioning System and Drone Robot Airplanes. FARC has suffered incredible defeats in the last 8 years, all due to GREAT AMERICAN TECHNOLOGY !.

The Pope forgave his would be assassin but he did not appoint him as cardinal !

Texas has 1.65 million undocumenteds, Romney won Texas by just under 1.3 million votes - Arizona has 400,000 undocumenteds and Romney won by 212,000 votes. - Georgia has 425,000 undocumenteds and Romney won by 308,000 votes

.

As things go now with the "Gang of Eight" the DREAMERS and Agricultural Workers will be American Citizens in five years.

Republicans made the grave mistake and sin of choosing Mitt Romney as candidate, an ass-kisser to Racists, Nativists and Ethnic Extremists. Can they repent and repair their fault ??

The One Million Dollar Question :

Can Republicans improve their standing among Latinos if they actively participate in the immigration reform process. ??

Will Latinos be psychologically harmed or wounded by Republicans during the Process of the "Migra" reform in Congress ??

And if the Reform is sunk by strong opposition will that undoubtedly and inevitably have some ethnic or racist component ??

If there is no Immigration Reform during Obama's Second Term then the Problem of the Undocumented Population may grow and grow.

It all depends on the Mental Flexibility and Agility of the Republican Party, so that the party is not forever anchored in the past.

Republicans can do nothing and subject themselves to the Trial and Verdict of History. Or they can examine their conscience and change their morals and standing against "The Other" and "The Otherness".

Paul Krugman : Our exaggerated fear of debt creates a catastrophe. It’s ruining many lives, and at the same time making us poorer and weaker in every way. And the longer we persist in this folly, the greater the damage will be

.

Excerpts from Paul Krugman in New York Times :

The shadow of long-term unemployment means that  austerity policies are counterproductive even in purely fiscal terms. Workers, after all, are taxpayers too; if our debt obsession exiles millions of Americans from productive employment, it will cut into future revenues and raise future deficits.

My Comment :

Observe that unemployment is always higher for Minorities and Very Young People in general. This should have political consequences.

Texas Unionists hand in hand with Catholic Nuns rooting for Medicaid Expansion for Texas, the state that has the record of inunsured citizens in the USA. Many of them located in the Southern Part of Texas and in Counties with a Hispanic Population.

The nuns are not confrontational but treat Governor Rick Perry with a lot of Christian Charity and Love :

"We understand that Gov. Perry is moderating his position (on Medicaid) as he sees the needs of real Texans," said Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of NETWORK, a national Catholic social justice group. "We just have to give him enough room so he can save face and he'll do the right thing."

The Population is Texas has a big proportion of Catholics, higher than in other states.

VIDEO : Bill Maher, Amy Holmes, Nicholas Kristof, Salman Rushide - Bill Maher against Filibuster and the injustice of Senator Diane Feinstein having 7.5 million votes, whereas others from tiny states go to the U. S. Senate with a few thousand votes

.

The USA has Car Control, but not Gun Control .... Cars are subjected to millions of controls, licenses for drivers, inspections, etc ....

The Filibuster paralyzes the USA decisions, and the U. S. Senate with two senators for each state is unjust and absurd. Because tiny states with few people have the same power as New York, California, Florida or Texas.

April 19th, 2013

Regular viewers of Bill Maher's show are well aware that one of the issues that gets Maher most fired up is the equal apportionment of senators to each U.S. state. Amidst discussion of the Boston bombings and gun control tonight, Maher went on a small rant against the Constitution and how every state does not deserve the same number of senators. He found it ridiculous that a small state like Wyoming gets as many senators as a huge state like California.

The panel was discussing gun control and why it failed in the Senate this week. Maher found it ridiculous that background checks, something supported by 90 percent of the people, failed to pass the Senate. He slammed the filibuster as a "silent coup" but also went after the Constitutional designation of two senators per state.

Maher pointed out that senators from small states are being elected by, and therefore represent, less people, so there should be proportional representation, like in the House of Representatives. "The Founding Fathers could not have foreseen AK-47s, they also could not have foreseen Wyoming and Montana. They could not have foreseen fifty states where we have this horrible situation..."

Salman Rushdie railed against the idea that the Second Amendment allows for unrestricted individual access to whatever weapons they want. Conservative pundit Amy Holmes questioned Maher wanting to reconstitute the Senate, and Maher shot back that the Constitution was not "brought to us by Jesus" and that the Founders themselves wanted it to be amended every so often.

Rushdie said that the United States is the only western democracy in which there are amendments to the basic idea of a simple majority win. When Nicholas Kristof brought up how conversations like these alarm people in North Dakota, Maher asked, "Why do we need two Dakotas to begin with?"

Maher also spoke out against the constant threat members of congress face of being primaried which forces them to lean ideologically way over to one side.

How do you protest against the Witches that are flying over your town, and having sex with he Devil ?? --- And against adultery, abortion, perversions, lewd and obscene people, and "gay marriage". How do you protest against Pervs ?? - Medieval Europe

.
Enter Cacerolazos ( Skimmingtons ), loud noise with pots, pans, ladles, spoons, casseroles, are not a modern Latin American Invention. They were strongly practiced in the USA and Britain. They go as far as Medieval Europe : against Witches, Adultery, Lewd or Obscene People

Cacerolazos or better "casseroles" has been popular in modern time in Canada ( Quebec ) :

In 2012 in Québec citizens were using cacerolazo after the adoption on 18 May of Bill 78, an act which restricts rights to assemble after violent riots erupted in Montreal and Victoriaville. Bill 78, aimed at restoring access to education for peaceful students and at protecting businesses and citizens from violence by some student protesters, has been criticized by the United Nations, the Quebec Bar Association, Amnesty International, and others. Court challenges against the bill are underway.

Skimmington
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Hogarth's engraving "Hudibras Encounters the Skimmington", 1822

A skimmington, or skimmington ride, is a rowdy parade with effigies of a victims or people dressed up to represent them, to make a public demonstration of moral disapproval of the individual or individuals. The form of the demonstration, and the reasons for it, varied between different places, but the general intent was public humiliation of the victim(s). In some cases the individual(s) themselves were forced to participate. Skimmingtons were typically noisy affairs, with rough music made by the clattering of pots and pans.

Origins, history and form

Skimmingtons, are recorded in England as far back as the 17th century,[1] and the practice is also recorded in colonial America from around the 1730s on.[2][3] The term is particularly associated with the West Country region of England, and although the etymology is not certain, it has been suggested that it derived from the ladle used in that region for cheesemaking, which was perceived as a weapon used by a woman to beat a weak or henpecked husband. The rationale for a skimmington varied, but one major theme was disapproval of a man for weakness in his relationship with his wife. A description of the custom in 1856 cites three main targets: a man who is worsted by his wife in a quarrel; a cuckolded man who accepts his wife's adultery; and any married person who engages in licentious conduct.[4] To "ride such a person skimmington" involved exposing them or their effigy to ridicule on a cart, or on the back of a horse or donkey. Some accounts describe the participants as carrying ladles and spoons with which to beat each other, at least in the case of skimmingtons prompted by marital discord. The noisy parade passed through the neighbourhood, and served as a punishment to the offender and a warning to others to abide by community norms; Roberts suggests that the homes of other potential victims were visited in a pointed manner during a skimmington.[4] According to one citation, a skimmington was broken up by the police in a village in Dorset as late as 1917.[5]

The antiquary and lexicographer Francis Grose described a skimmington as: "Saucepans, frying-pans, poker and tongs, marrow-bones and cleavers, bulls horns, etc. beaten upon and sounded in ludicrous processions" (A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, 1796).

In Warwickshire, the custom was known as "loo-belling", and in northern England as "riding the stang".

During the Western Rising of 1628–31, which was a rebellion in south-west England against the enclosure of royal forest lands, the name "Lady Skimmington" was adopted by the leader of the protest movement.[6] According to some sources the name was used by a number of men involved with the Western Rising, who dressed in women's clothes not only as a method of disguise, but also in order to symbolise their protest against a breach of the established order.[7]
In art and literature

The Late Lancashire Witches, a play by Thomas Howarth and Richard Brome, features a horseback skimmington ride prompted by a woman who seeks greater independence.

In Samuel Butler's Hudibras, the central character encounters a skimmington in a scene notably illustrated by William Hogarth.

A skimmington is depicted in a plaster frieze in Montacute House, which dates from the Elizabethan era, and shows a man mounted on a pole, carried on the shoulders of others[8].

A skimmington forms a well-known scene in Thomas Hardy's 1884 novel The Mayor of Casterbridge. Effigies of the mayor and Lucetta, a former lover, are paraded through the streets on a donkey by a noisy crowd when rumours of their prior relationship surface. Lucetta, now respectably married to Henchard's rival Farfrae, collapses in distress and humiliation, miscarries her baby and dies.

:"They are coming up Corn Street after all! They sit back to back!"

"What--two of 'em—are there two figures?"
"Yes. Two images on a donkey, back to back, their elbows tied to one another's! She's facing the head, and he's facing the tail."
"Is it meant for anybody in particular?"
"Well--it mid be. The man has got on a blue coat and kerseymere leggings; he has black whiskers, and a reddish face. 'Tis a stuffed figure, with a falseface." (...)

The numerous lights round the two effigies threw them up into lurid distinctness; it was impossible to mistake the pair for other than the intended victims.

"Come in, come in," implored Elizabeth; "and let me shut the window!"
"She's me—she's me—even to the parasol—my green parasol!" cried Lucetta with a wild laugh as she stepped in. She stood motionless for one second—then fell heavily to the floor.

—Thomas Hardy, The Mayor of Casterbridge

The Skimmity Hitchers are a Scrumpy & Western band from the West Country of England. They took their name from the Skimmington (known as Skimmity in Dorset)to reflect their music and stage show which s a mix of rough music, parody, drunkeness and audience humiliation.
