"At the state level, most Republican governors have refused to set up insurance exchanges, and many have refused to expand Medicaid, which is the primary vehicle for insuring those currently uninsured.

The question, though, is whether governors who purposefully do a very bad job implementing Obamacare will hurt the law or hurt themselves and their states. Call it the California versus Texas question.

Taking Action

In 2010, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California signed into law two bills to establish the online insurance marketplace -- “exchanges” -- that are at the center of Obama’s health-care reform. In addition to being the first state to pass such legislation, California promptly accepted the law’s Medicaid expansion. By this time next year, when the expansion is fully under way, it’s possible that the portion of the state’s uninsured population will have declined from 20 percent to less than 5 percent.

In Texas, the situation is just the opposite. The Lone Star State isn’t lifting a finger to create an exchange, instead leaving the work to the federal government. Texas is refusing Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion, too. “The idea that we would expand and put more money and more people into a broken system is not unlike putting another 1,000 people on the Titanic,” Republican Governor Rick Perry told Forbes. “You know how this is going to turn out. And it’s going to be a disaster.”

One might observe that the health-care system in Texas, which has the nation’s highest rate of uninsured residents at 24 percent, is already a disaster. The recalcitrance of Perry and Republican state lawmakers has the potential to make matters much worse.

In Havana Cuba there are "Peace Talks" between the Colombian Government and the FARC guerrillas. The guerrillas have been constantly defeated and decimated in the last 8 years. They can live forever hiding in the jungle. They have lost 95% of their previous power and territory.

The statements from Rand Paul and the RNC Republican National Committee seem to strongly imply that Congress Republicans should support some generous offer of citizenship, or "Amnesty" as many people say.

Rand Paul is somewhat "crazy" and "odd" but he is a new fresh face and has new fame, possibly to be a Presidential Candidate for Republicans. Paul Ryan on the other hand is a worn and spent figure and has the "stench" of Mitt Romney. The admiration of Payl Ryan for Artistic Poseur Ayn Rand is very laughable and despicable.

I describe Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan as "Those that want to fall upwards" .... The more they lose in politics, the more that they are stubborn, intransigent, fanatic, dogmatic, biased and obstinate in old, failed ideas of Plutocracy and anti-diversity.

Rand Paul made some stupid declarations in the Rachel Maddow Show that imply that he is an enemy of Civil Rights, I don't know if he can correct course and make peace with Black People and Minorities. We saw the Greatest Master of Flip-Flop Mitt Romney getting millions of votes after his shameful turnarounds, super hypocrisy and daily lies. So everything is possible, but only in politics !!

Faced with crushing inflation (about which the regime lies shamelessly) and increasing hardship, Argentine voters have a severe case of political buyer’s remorse.

And along comes Pope Francis, who literally kisses the feet of the poor, who’s admired by his country’s mainstream-Protestant, Evangelical, Jewish and Muslim communities and who rejects the trappings of power and comforts of wealth.

Each May, in Buenos Aires Cathedral, then-Cardinal Bergoglio delivered the traditional sermon during the great Te Deum mass celebrating Argentina’s 1810 Revolution. Even as the government crushed one free media outlet after another, it couldn’t silence the cardinal. He inveighed each year against public and personal corruption and growing totalitarianism. Everyone listening knew who he meant.

The government tried everything, even moving the Te Deum celebrations to other cities. Nothing worked.

Meanwhile, President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner rejected all dialogue with the cardinal, refusing at least 14 requests for meetings. Now she’had to make a pilgrimage yesterday to pay homage to the holy man she mocked. (She tried, deviously, to turn the situation to her advantage by involving the pope in the Falklands/Malvinas stand-off with Britain.)

The new generation of leftist regimes pocking Latin America (the ruined Venezuela of the late Hugo Chavez; the silence-the-media tyranny of Rafael Correa in Ecuador; the living-dead rulers of Cuba, and Argentina’s economy-wrecking government) dread the possibility that Pope Francis will be as disastrous for Latin leftist regimes as Pope John Paul II was for the Soviet Bloc.

 Is it better to turn down federal funds and to dump the cost of health care for the uninsured on hospital emergency rooms and ultimately on local-property taxpayers? Make no mistake about it: The health care costs of the uninsured in Texas are a hidden tax on property. Property taxpayers have to make up the difference in the health care costs of the uninsured, or see local taxes go up. I grant you that there is a cost to accepting federal funds. The cost is in the loss of control over health care policy in this state. But, let's face it, health care policy in this state stinks. We have great hospitals, great research, and lousy government. I'd rather put the money  in the hands of the people who deliver the services than in the hands of the politicians. I suspect this is what Straus thinks too. Forget the ideology. Show me the money.

I fear that Texas is going to let a great opportunity slip through its fingers. State officials, including Straus, appear to insist on a "Texas-centric solution" before they will touch filthy lucre. Unless Straus's powers of persuasion are superhuman, it isn't going to work. Medicaid is an entitlement program. If state officials insist upon co-pays, deductibles, and other devices that are incompatible with the concept of an entitlement program, the state is going to pick up its marbles and say no, as it has done in the past. Unless things change, the best we can hope for is to squeeze out some dollars that can be used to obtain insurance for the uninsured. Very few things would be more helpful for business—and taxpayers—in this state.

Venezuela is a Santa Claus Economy where the Government gives gifts to buy support. So the elimination of poverty may be illusory. Those people have no productive jobs.

Sources close to Chavez and his socialist party told Al Jazeera that senior government planners generally assumed - like leftists the world over - that crime is caused primarily by poverty and inequality. Address the root causes, they reasoned, and crime will decrease. But the data hasn't borne out those conclusions, leaving many scratching their heads.

Poverty dropped from 50.4 per cent in 1998 when Chavez was first elected to 28.5 per cent in 2009, according to the World Bank, an impressive decrease by any standard. Government supporters credit the redistribution of oil wealth - Venezuela has the world's largest petroleum reserves - for reducing poverty.

WASHINGTON -- In a new book, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) makes a notable reversal on immigration reform, arguing that creating a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants would only encourage future unauthorized immigration.

"It is absolutely vital to the integrity of our immigration system that actions have consequences -- in this case, that those who violated the law can remain but cannot obtain the cherished fruits of citizenship," Bush and lawyer Clint Bolick argue in a new book, Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution. "To do otherwise would signal once again that people who circumvent the system can still obtain the full benefits of American citizenship."

The book, which The Huffington Post obtained before its Tuesday release, lays out the two men's proposals for comprehensive immigration reform. Both are longtime proponents of reform, and Bush in particular has long beat the drum for the GOP to take a new tone on the matter.

But the book's treatment of a pathway to citizenship stands in contrast to Bush's previous statements on immigration reform.
